Umara Sinhawansa is one of Sri Lankas most respected and loved singers. Being an accomplished song writer, producer, sound engineer and entrepreneur, she heralds from a musical background. She is known for her unique powerful voice and style of singing in hits such as ‘Shaheena’, 'Kasthuri Suwandata', 'Sinaha Ko'. Her style of singing is not limited to one but rather caters to a raft of genres from Pop, Jazz, Classical. She is well known for her ability of multilingual singing. With a career of over two decades both in her native country and abroad, she is a well-seasoned and popular artist who is loved by fans of all ages. Her ever popular hit songs such as ‘Wassanayata’, “ Malakuth Thibuna” have captured the hearts of fans across the world. A former member of Bhathiya and Santhush (BnS), she is one of the most popular and highly sought-after artists in the industry. Her sophisticated disposition is complimented by her ability to capture audiences and keep crowds on their toes for as long as it takes. She is also a jazz musician, with impressive performance in world class venues in Hong Kong for seven years. Umara has toured all over the world and has a lot of experience and skill that has is unique to her. May it be Jazz, Hip hop, Classic, RnB or any genre of music– she masters it all, and always marks a distinction in whatever creative aspect she gets engaged in, because she does it all with passion and commitment. She believes practice, hard work and being organized as key ingredients for success.
Her parents Tony and Ayesha Sinhawansa are key influencers in her career. Her passion and talent for singing was evident at a very young age. At just age one and a half years she picked up the lyrics of Always by Atlantic star and cherish by Madonna and sang out the songs pitch perfect to the surprise of everyone. Having spent her childhood touring Europe along with her parents, her style of singing was greatly influenced, enabling her to sing in French, German, Italian and other languages flawlessly. Her stint in Hong Kong enabled her to master the jazz genre to a higher level. Demonstrating her talent with her voice, she won awards at inter school as well as all-island school singing competitions, while later on representing Sri Lanka at international singing competitions and winning awards in Ukraine, Astana, Kazakhstan and China. Her first studio professional recording was at age ten. She has carved a niche in the local music industry for herself. Releasing albums, winning acclaimed international and local awards, and judging prominent TV reality music and talent shows, Umara has positively influenced the entertainment industry in Sri Lanka. At the age of 16, Umara kick starts as a professional singer drawing mass crowds through an audition with Sri Shyamalingam - which she emotionally recalls as an important milestone in her music career.
Umara's music production career started as being the youngest female Audio Engineer in Sri Lanka at the famous ‘Saregama’ music studio. Amongst her many accolades she is the only Sri Lankan female to have collaborated with the legendary international artist 'Shankar Mahadevan' also known as Shankar Ehsaan Loy. The only female member in the panel of Judges at the program – Youth with Talent and acts as a mentor on the ‘Ranaviru Real Star’ program as well. Currently an active Judge on Sri Lankas No 1 Reality TV show, “Derana Dreamstar”, she takes pride in being the first Star Judge and the only female judge at the world's first online singing competition launched to identify new talent.
Among her many accomplishments, she established her music school “Umara Music Studio” in 2017. This is a manifestation of her dream to contribute towards the development of ‘Sri Lankan Talent’ and uplift the standards of the industry by polishing talent with aspects of the profession that many tend to keep secretive. Her school is the perfect platform to pass the knowledge needed to succeed and thrive in the music industry. Even though she is constantly engaged in international tours while teaching and coaching at her Academy ‘Umara Music Studio’, Umara spends time with social work. She believes that music can heal and engages in music therapy for children with Autism and special Needs. May it be live or recorded performances, she has won the hearts of Sri Lankans across the globe. With much to offer in the future, Umara aims at expanding her domain by growing her school by introducing other specialty courses that complement the industry, while assuring to provide exciting new musical productions to her fans.
